Editor's Pick
Gallery
I started this project a long long time ago and have worked on it on and off. Ihave no idea how long I ever actually spent on it but probably way too long. It’s always been my experimental piece so a lot of the stuff on here I hadn’t tried before at the time. It took me down some rabbit holes between not having a strong enough computer to complete the sculpt at one point, obsessing over color detail from all angles thinking about maybe a 3D print or animated poster which lead to wanting to attempt a real hair sim (which ended up being a deep deep rabbit hole, but I settled on a sculpt with a little paint over in the final image here). I decided I finally wanted to wrap up this project so I spent a week wrapping it up and putting together renders for this composite.
The models were started in Maya and finished in Zbrush. Textures were started in Photoshop and finished in Zbrush and Cinema 4D Body Paint and are all hand painted. Final renders we created in Maya Mental Ray and composites in Photoshop. The only minor airbrushing is applied to the hair and feathers, and a couple small composite mask bleeds around the rock.

altruism Editor's Pick
I did this entry in a little challenge over 2 months at the Danish 3D
community 3dmaxer.dk with the strange and mind boggling theme "Surreal
Reality".
"altruism" has a surrealistic touch to it and a deep message flowing
through it as well. It depicts an in my opinion very important part of
life, reality, in a surrealistic and symbolic way. Ultimately, it's up
to the spectator what he/she feels it is about.
Rendering times ended up being about 7-8 hours for all layers all
together in the native resolution 2868x1200 pixels. There is somewhere
about 40.000 characters in the image, the biggest part rendered on 2D
alpha planes distributed by particle systems. The foremost 40
characters are full 3D and posed by hand.
The image is post-processed and composited in Photoshop. The background
mountains are hand painted here as well, and the sky is an image
retouched and hand painted upon to remove some of the 2D look and add
more volumetric feel to the clouds.
Thanks for viewing my image. More of the same stuff at my website MathiasPedersen.com

Starry Night Editor's Pick
Based on the feeling of awe when one looks up
into the big and beautiful night sky full of stars. The mystery and
wonder of life's greatness. The piece is starring a little redhaired
boy in pyjamas, looking fascinated up into the huge sky - at that
moment realizing how small we all are compared to the world around us.
I have done a tutorial in 3 parts covering the process of making "Starry Night" from beginning to end. It can be found at my website: MathiasPedersen.com
