This script hardened the normals of the objects selected as well as doing what it was made to do. Hopefully this can be fixed. This script works like a charm otherwise.

I failed to realize the "Smooth Shade" option was not a render layer specific switch.
Turned off smooth shading globaly I did.
D'oh.
