When I started working on Maya 5.0, I noticed that there was a mirror setup for the joints but nor for the character setup including ik Handles and subsequent groupings.

This script does the following:-

Once you have created all the skeleton and setup the ik handles on one side of a symmetric structure, say left part of the body, then running this script will

-> duplicate the ik setup for the other side with renaming, e.g. on the right side of the body. The effectors of the ik Handles will be snapped to the corresponding bone on the other side( hence positioned correctly)

-> the hierarchy on the other side is maintained same as on the original side. Groups will be auto created and renamed as per the original side's conventions.

The constraint for running this script is only that naming has to be done consistently, otherwise it will not work , for example, all the left side bones,ik handles , and groups have to be prefixed with the same name,e.g. "leftKnee".

By default, the program locates for the "L" ik's and replaces them with the "R" ones. But you can follow your own naming conventions, whatever they are, by just changing the values of variables $name1 and $name2 in the top two lines of the script(opens in Notepad easily). The only constraint, as I have already mentioned, is that your name has to be a prefix(e.g., topBone where "top" is a prefix) and naming has to be done consistently(e.g., all top joints prefixed by "top" and not that one is prefixed by "top" and the other prefixed by "front" or even nothing!

No extra groups or nodes are created now.
